Weapons / Delivery Systems Facilities Eliminations
We have been awarded contracts by the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) to eliminate the intercontinental ballistic missiles and their facilities in the Former Soviet Union’s (FSU).
We have eliminated such systems in the Ukraine and Russia.
From 1994 through 2003 we disassembled, disposed of, eliminated, salvaged, and stored FSU Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) for the DTRA.
The projects were carried out in two separate phases:
- The first phase entailed planning, design, and permitting.
- The second phase included construction, operation, and maintenance of the storage facilities and supporting infrastructure.
Work in the FSU continues.
In 1994 the U.S. Department of Defense awarded Washington Division its first Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) contract to eliminate more than 100 SS-19 Inter-continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) in the Ukraine. Additional contracts to disassemble and eliminate five other weapons facilities followed. In September 2001 we were one of five America firms selected to share in the $5 billion DOD Cooperative Threat Reduction Integrating Contract (CTRIC). On these complex projects our project managers must overcome deficiencies in infrastructure including the repair and improvement of:
- Disassembly facilities
- Roads
- Railroads
- Heating plants
- Water and fire protection systems
- Electrical systems
- Communications and security systems
In order to bridge cultural gaps at sites in Russia and Ukraine, we have applied American management disciplines and incentives to fulfill our contracts while earning the respect of both governments.
In addition to the ongoing Weapons Demilitarization Projects, we were selected to supply a fossil fuel boiler facility in Russia to enable the shut down and replacement of a Plutonium Production Reactor in Siberia.
