Energy Fuels - Coal
We have five decades of experience in coal mining including the $1.9 billion El Cerrejón Coal Mine—the largest turnkey coal project ever developed by a single contractor—and the 20-million-tonnes-per-year MIBRAG lignite mine near Leipzig, Germany where Washington Division is a 50-percent equity/management partner.
Among our accomplishments in the coal industry:
- We were part of the first privatization of the MIBRAG operations. Formerly state-owned, MIBRAG was converted from a large government-firm organization to an efficient private company recognized as one of the country’s most modern mining operations.
- Our award-winning safety program at MIBRAG has influenced the entire German lignite mining industry.
- The El Cerrejón Coal Mine project was originally estimated at $2.1 billion. Through efficient time and financial management we completed the project $200 million under budget.
- At the Paso Diablo Surface Coal Mine west of Maracaibo, Venezuela, Washington Division used best-in-class operating and maintenance practices to increase production by 77 percent within the first 24 months of the project using existing equipment fleet.
- As a 20% equity partner in Westmoreland Resources, we mined more than 6.4 million tons of coal per year. We conducted coal quality studies, extensive mine and geologic modeling, and simulation for future mine planning as well as developed mining skills and supervisory training programs for Crow Nation tribal members—who comprise 80 percent of the workforce.
