We use strict safety systems, practices and incentive programs and insist on complying with or exceeding agency regulations.
Our commitment to safety has been recognized around the world. Recent highlights of our standard setting performance include:
- Our joint venture coal mining operations at the MIBRAG complex in eastern Germany has been repeatedly recognized by RoSPA including Gold Awards in 2000 and 2001, "High Commitment" recognition in 2002, and "Silver Awards" in 2006 and 2007 recognizing a "high level of performance."
- The BBG Mining Trade Association of Germany has recognized our MIBRAG mine 14 times over the years, including a "Seal of Quality—System-Based Safety" following a 2005 safety audit.
- MIBRAG also received a "Health and Safety Award" for safest performance in the industry from the State of Saxony-Anhalt in 2004.
- Our bauxite mining project in Jamaica received the Minister's Cup for best safety practice among large quarrying operations from the Jamaican National Mineral Industry in 2006.
- Receipt of 12 awards from the National Safety Council and U.S. Department of Labor.
- A recorded 2,900 days without a lost time accident at industrial minerals operations in Idaho.
