Project Overview
The Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System (JACADS) was the world’s first full scale facility built to destroy chemical weapons, the first chemical incineration system to complete destruction of its stockpile of weapons and agents, and the first chemical agent disposal system to complete remediation of the site where it had been located.
This program processed 6.6 percent of the nation's chemical stockpile—2,031 tons of chemical agent in projectiles, mortars, containers, cartridges, rockets, mines and bombs.
Highlights & Accomplishments
-
The Johnson Atoll was a prototype integrated chemical weapons disposal facility hailed as a "major accomplishment" by the Chemical Materials Agency. It has since served as a model for all chemical agent incineration disposal facilities due to a stellar safety record.
-
The JACADS closure has won plaudits of the highest order from the Army including ISO14-001 certification, the highest rating for environmental management systems.
-
We closed the facility and converted the island into a wildlife refuge for exotic fish, rare coral life and seabirds.
