Mining Projects

Under a long-term contract that lasted more than 30 years, Washington Division provided operations and mine-management services. The mine, built by us in 1972, produced seven million tons per year of coal. We also held a 20 percent equity position in the project.

APEX Silver-Zinc Mine
Apex Silver’s newest mine is located in the High Andes of Bolivia. We are responsible for the development of all mine plant facilities as well as preproduction mining. more

AREVA Uranium Study— We are providing engineering services for AREVA, a worldwide leader in the uranium mining and production industries.  AREVA is performing a feasibility study for developing the Imouraren Uranium deposit located in Niger, Africa. more

Cerrejón Coal Development
This $2 billion turnkey project, the largest ever completed by a single contractor, included development of a 15-million-ton-peryear surface coal mine, a 90-mile-long mine-to-port railroad and a new seaport all built in a rugged and isolated area of Colombia in the early 1980s.

Cerro San Pedro
Washington Division was awarded the site-development and contract-mining contract in 2004 for the new Metallica Resources’ gold/silver mine development in central Mexico. The $105 million (U.S.) project will include earthworks for the processing area and mine.

Conda Mining
We have performed contract mining for phosphate, ballast, and quarry products in Idaho and Montana for some 30 years. Multi-mine operations are expected to continue and could expand to other mining opportunities in the Idaho region.

FortKnox Gold Mine
This $370 million project in Alaska was completed for Fairbanks Gold Mining Inc., a subsidiary of Amax Gold, Inc. It involved construction of a facility to process 36,000 tons of gold ore per day. As prime contractor for the development, Washington Division managed subcontractors for the construction of the primary crusher building, conveyor system, multi-floor mill, and refinery complex; served as the design liaison; and coordinated engineered-equipment procurement.

Jamaica Bauxite Mining
We are working under two, 10-year contracts to mine one-third of Jamaica's annual bauxite production.  Our safety and reclamation performance has garnered praise from the Jamaican government. more

Kapuskasing Phosphate Mine
In 2003, Washington Division was awarded a five year contract to operate the Agrium Kapuskasing Phosphate Mine near Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada to meet the needs of Agrium’s Canadian processing facility for the next two decades. more

MIBRAG Mining Project
We have been involved in this equity/management project in Germany for ten years and hold a 50-percent equity position. Our current project scope includes consulting, mine planning, engineering, maintenance, and operations management. more

Paso Diablo
We provided mine-management services for the operations, planning, engineering, maintenance, human resources, training, labor relations, safety and hygiene, and environmental systems at the Paso Diablo Coal Mine near Maracaibo, Venezuela. We introduced best-in-class operating and maintenance practices and increased annual coal production capacity by 77 percent to 7.1 million tons and overburden removal to 45 million bank cubic yards.
