Project Overview

In 1994, the consortium of Washington Division, NRG Energy, Inc. and PowerGen plc. acquired holdings in MIBRAG, a state-owned mining, power, and industrial processing conglomerate in the former German Democratic Republic.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Morrison Knudsen Deutschland GmbH, Washington Division provides mine engineering and operations consulting and management services to produce 18 million tons of lignite annually, disturbing about 60 hectares of land to remove more than 45 million bank cubic meters of earth.

Approximately 85 percent of the lignite production is sold as feedstock for power and heating plants. The remaining lignite is used by MIBRAG as industrial boiler fuel and in the production of briquettes.

Highlights & Accomplishments:

  • We have been repeatedly recognized by RoSPA including Gold Awards in 2000 and 2001, "High Commitment" recognition in 2002, and "Silver Awards" in 2006 and 2007 recognizing a "high level of performance."
  • The BBG Mining Trade Association of Germany has recognized our MIBRAG mine 14 times including a "Seal of Quality—System-Based Safety" following a 2005 safety audit.
