Project Safety Highlights - Mining

Lucie Steam Generator and Reactor Head Replacement, Florida

Washington Division’s SGT LLC joint venture maintained a safe working environment under hazardous conditions during nuclear retrofit operations at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. Work in 2006 included construction upgrades, site preparations and N-1 outage work including scaffold/shoring erection, feedwater modifications, and permanent removal of selected main steam whip restraints in preparation for the upcoming steam generator and reactor head replacement project.

2006 Highlights

  • The project implemented a strong new-hire orientation program emphasizing past performance and expectations moving forward.
  • We developed project-hazard analysis and "look-ahead" for every aspect of the project, resulting in a project plan providing win-win results for all parties.
  • An Issue Identification and Resolution program as well as an established lessons-learned database is used in all areas of project planning to ensure success through all phases of the project.
  • A Safety Observation Program was established at the job site requiring all project employees to submit observation cards for both good and poor safety practices.

The project implemented a tracking mechanism of key elements of the safety program and human performance to monitor positive and negative trending.
